Hello,
Please bear with me as my use of Live has been limited compared to most I suspect. I came from the land of Performer, Cakewalk and the like, and found that I could create so much faster in Live that it became my sequencer of choice. This despite the fact that I do little to no audio and have never used it 'Live'
Now however I am looking to gig as a keyboard player for the first time in quite a while. I'm going to try softsynth-only, using a pc laptop if all goes well. I was pretty much resolved to using Live by (if nothing else) arming tracks with pre-loaded vsts.
  • Hey guys I know this thread is already old but I have found I nice way to use my vst plugins during live mixing. I use a Midas Vencie F32, this desk is kind of a inline desk with built in 32x32 firewire audiointerface. I just connect it to my Mac Book Pro Late 2011 i7 256 GB SSD, 8GB RAM and use it with Cubase.
  • Serious Live Performance Software Cantabile is a powerful and flexible VST host designed for live performing stage musicians who want to perform better. Cantabile is the best way we know to play.

Cantabile is definitely the 'go-to' app for live plugin performance on PC now. Sure there are alternatives (GigPerformer, BloXpander, Rack Performer, Bidule) but for its power and features (Brad is always working on the software and very careful of customers' observations), Cantabile is doing great.

But...a coworker who plays live shows on a Mac showed me Mainstage, and this got me wanting a slicker approach than arming tracks. Being able to create splits for example is very handy. Obviously for pc I'm in trouble, as there is no Mainstage version (and I'm not eager to spend a bunch more money regardless )
I've started looking into VST hosts, a new world I knew nothing about, checking into such programs as Forte, VST Host etc. Before I go too far though, I want to make sure I'm exhausting the possibilites within Live. (I'd never messed with Clips at all until yesterday for example; I found them in the manual when looking for Program Changes). Speaking of, is there a way to 'draw' program changes into a @##$#@ track? That's something I used to do with other sequencers. I could potentially put my set's changes in a sequence that I could 'play' to go to the next song without loading a new ableton file. Loading a new ableton file, one per song, is an option that I considered--I'd wonder about loading times though.

I'm looking to avoid monkeying around on the pc during the gig as much as possible. Basically I need a way to change patches (and ideally other settings such as effects, levels). I'd love it if Live works out for me, as I dearly love the program for at-home composing (ironically)
